BACKGROUND:
The Public Works Department's Sanitation Division provides approximately 17,750 residential customers with weekly curbside garbage collection. Residential garbage collection is provided between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday (plus Fridays during holiday weeks). The approximate annual amount of residential garbage collected equals 19,000 tons. Each residential garbage truck averages two loads per day.
The City's approximately 13,000 commercial, industrial, and multi-family customers receive solid waste collection services ranging from once a week to six times a week, with dumpster sizes ranging from two to eight cubic yards and roll-off compactors. The approximate annual amount of commercial and industrial waste collected by the Commercial Division equals 44,000 tons. Each commercial garbage truck averages two to three loads per day, up to nine trucks Monday through Friday, and two trucks on Saturday. Regular collection services are provided daily between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m., except on Sundays.
The City requires a location to dispose of the waste collected daily, as well as the disposal of city operations-generated light bulbs, traffic signal light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and end-of-service-life wood electric utility poles removed by Ocala Electric Utility. Additionally, the City requires a location for the supply and delivery of portalets for special events.
