BACKGROUND:
The Ocala Police Department has utilized Taser Energy Weapons since 2005 to provide officers with a less-lethal option when encountering noncompliant subjects. The Department's current five-year taser contract with Axon Enterprises Inc. will expire on December 16, 2023.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:
The utilization of Taser Energy Weapons has become an industry standard which provides enhanced safety for law enforcement officers and the citizens they serve. The Ocala Police Department has deployed the AXON model 7 taser during the entirety of the current contract and those devices are now reaching their five-year effective lifespan. Therefore, the devices will no longer be supported or warrantied by the vendor.
This proposed 5-year contract includes 231 AXON model 10 tasers, unlimited cartridge replacement, batteries, docking stations, holsters, training gear and warranties. The TASER 10 platform also provides for de-escalation features, an increased effective range of 45 feet, additional probe deployment, and individually targeted probes to drastically improve overall accuracy and effectiveness.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The Fiscal Year 2023-24 budget includes $142,560 in account 001-018-822-521-52-52010 to cover all 231 police department TASERs as part of this program. Year two through year five payments will be budgeted in the appropriate fiscal years in accordance with the summary of payments.
