BACKGROUND:
The Ocala Police Department (OPD) is committed to training its staff in the most effective ways possible. Over the years, OPD has rented several virtual training machines that allow officers to walk through scenarios that test everything from situational awareness to decision-making. OPD has found that the process of renting, setting up, and breaking down the equipment is not conducive to the amount of continuous training required. The agency conducted research by visiting other facilities to test equipment to determine which would be best.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:
The Ocala Police Department has found that the Laser Shot training simulator best fits its needs. This equipment will be installed permanently at OPD headquarters and can be used at any time of day or night to provide real-time training. This will greatly reduce the timeframe for offering remedial training to officers. This equipment is multi-screen, allowing for better immersion in the training scenarios. The equipment includes CO2 cartridges for recoil, OC spray, and nighttime training, and will allow OPD instructors to change scenarios to simulate real life spontaneously.
