BACKGROUND:
Since 2010, the School Board of Marion County (MCSB) has permitted the City of Ocala to utilize school buses for Recreation and Parks Department and Police Department summer program transportation needs.
For Summer 2023, the City will rent a total of two (2), 83-passenger buses commencing May 30, 2023, and ending July 28, 2023. The rental cost for the buses is $200 per month, per bus.
The City shall be responsible for providing properly licensed drivers for the buses. Seasonal summer camp staff who have the proper credentials will be hired for this purpose.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:
* Several hundred children participate in summer camp programs with the Recreation and Parks Department.
* The agreement with MCSB provides a cost-effective approach to meeting the City's summer transportation needs without the cost of maintaining these buses year-round.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The rental cost is $200 per month, per bus. The estimated cost for the use of the two required buses is $800. The cost does not include unforeseen repairs, routine maintenance, or fuel necessary for City use of these buses. The costs are covered in Recreation and Parks Department's budget (001-021-130-575-57-44010).
