BACKGROUND:

The cascade system, also known as a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) fill station, is required to fill and refill 4,500 psi air cylinders worn by firefighters that provide breathable air in an immediately dangerous to life or health atmosphere. One of Ocala Fire Rescue’s current breathing air fill stations is over 30 years old. As a result, the stressed unit has required additional maintenance and upkeep to allow it to function within acceptable limits and has required several rebuilds of the compressor block to keep it functioning properly. We have been advised that the unit is obsolete and should be replaced.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:

The replacement of this equipment will improve firefighter safety and continue to allow for two locations for SCBA bottle refills.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Fire Rescue was approved for $50,000 Fiscal Year 2021-2022 through the annual budget and a budget resolution has been requested for the remaining $9,952 on this same agenda.  With the adoption of the accompanying budget resolution, funds will be available in account number 120-019-910-522-66-64010.
