BACKGROUND:
The Mayor and City Council members receive a monthly vehicle allowance to offset costs associated with using personal vehicles for official City business, including travel to meetings, events, and intergovernmental activities.
The current monthly vehicle allowances are as follows:
• Mayor: $400
• City Council Members: $300
These allowance amounts were last adjusted in 2015 and have remained unchanged for approximately ten years. During this period, vehicle ownership and operating costs have increased.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:
Staff reviewed the current vehicle allowance structure and determined that the existing amounts no longer reasonably reflect the costs incurred by elected officials when using personal vehicles to conduct official City business.
To promote consistency and administrative simplicity, staff recommends establishing a monthly uniform vehicle allowance of $850 for all elected officials, including the Mayor and five City Council members.
Staff recommends approval.
FISCAL IMPACT:
A transfer from the General Fund Reserve for Contingencies account 001-099-999-513-81-99800 will cover the requested amount, and the budget impact for the remaining seven months of Fiscal Year 2025-26 is $22,400. An accompanying budget resolution is provided on the same agenda.
