body

BACKGROUND:

A request has been made by Mrs. Loretta Jenkins for an honorary street name designation to recognize Mr. Whitfield Jenkins for his long-time, active, outstanding leadership in Ocala, Marion County, and Florida. For decades, Mr. Jenkins has been engaged in many ventures related to civil and equal rights activism, voter rights and empowerment, and many other areas concerning equal and human justice for all people.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:

The City’s honorary street name designation policy requires submission of a formal letter, a $25 application fee, and a petition signed by at least 70 percent of the owners of real property adjoining the public road right-of-way of the proposed honorary street name designation.

The applicant submitted a formal letter, resume, and petition with 16 signatures. The proposed location of the honorary street name designation has 34 parcels adjoining NW 24th Road from NW 20th Street to NW 21st Avenue. The petition included 16 signatures (47 percent). Of the 16 signatures provided, six were from owners of real property (18 percent). Staff recommends waiving the petition requirement. The applicant has asked, and staff recommends waiving the $25 application fee. The Public Works Traffic Division will fabricate, install, and maintain the signs.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Funds are available for Fiscal Year 2025 in account #109-023-201-541-54-52010 in the amount of $200 for signs.
