body

BACKGROUND:

Since 2010, the School Board of Marion County, Florida (MCSB) has permitted the City of Ocala to utilize school buses for Recreation and Parks Department and Police Department summer program transportation needs.

For Summer 2024, the City will rent two, 83-passenger buses beginning May 28, 2024, and ending July 26, 2024.  The rental cost for the buses is $200 per month, per bus.

The City is responsible for providing properly licensed drivers for the buses.  Seasonal summer camp staff who have the proper credentials are hired for this purpose.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:

Annually, approximately 800 children participate in summer camp programs in the City’s Recreation and Parks Department.  This Cooperative Agreement with MCSB will provide a cost-effective approach to meeting the City’s summer transportation needs without the cost associated with maintaining these buses year-round.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The rental cost for the buses is $200 per month, per bus.  The estimated total cost for the use of the two required buses is $800. The cost does not include unforeseen repairs, routine or emergency maintenance, or fuel.  The costs are covered in the Recreation and Parks Department’s budget (001-021-132-579-57-34010).
