body

BACKGROUND:

In accordance with the General Aviation Terminal design, staff proposes integrating a unique aviation themed playground close to the restaurant side of the terminal.  This playground will augment the terminal experience, attracting parents and children to the airport to watch real airplanes up close while playing, hanging, climbing on airplane jungle gym type equipment.

After discussion at several Airport Advisory Board meetings, the Advisory Board voted unanimously in favor of the playground, encouraging staff to work closely with Elevation89, (the airport terminal restaurant) to ensure the playground setting would not impede any outdoor seating opportunities the restaurant may pursue in the future.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:

Airport staff worked closely with Recreation and Parks staff on the location, design, cost, and target audience.

Funding is through Recreation and Parks and Airport Budget (see fiscal impact below).

Contract for construction and associated budget resolutions will be brought to City Council at its April 19 meeting.

Playground will be added to Recreation and Parks annual certification and safety inspections schedules.

The airport playground will become the fifth playground in the southwest quadrant, as listed by Recreation and Parks.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Rec and Parks:                     $60,000
Airport:                     $96,241
Total:
                     $156,241

If the concept is approved, a budget resolution will be brought for Council consideration at the City Council meeting scheduled for April 19, 2022.
