BACKGROUND:

The City of Ocala is a member of the Florida Municipal Power Agency (FMPA) and provides electric utility services to approximately 58,000 customers by relying upon FMPA's wholesale power supply of which Natural gas generation is a critical component.

FMPA monitors the federal government's regulation of natural gas production practices, specifically the Environmental Protection Agency's regulation of greenhouse gas emission standards for fossil fuel-fired electric generation and advises the City that the EPA is currently reviewing its regulations of these standards. EPA is currently considering a proposal to repeal certain greenhouse gas emission standards for fossil fuel-fired electric generation which would support the current fuel generation methods upon which both FMPA and the City of Ocala rely.

At the request of FMPA, staff has reviewed proposed language and prepared a letter of support for the EPA's review and repeal of these greenhouse gas emission standards for fossil fuel-fired electric generation.

The proposed letter is presented to City Council for its review and approval.
