BACKGROUND:
Justin Alsedek, local Ocala artist, seeks to paint an outdoor mural on the exterior wall of the Face the Day Salon and Spa. The spa is located at 118 SW Ft King St, Ocala FL 34471. This location is near Parking Garage 2, a new construction and development site for downtown Ocala. The purpose of this art is to enhance the downtown environment spreading positivity, creativity, and economic development with a colorful art piece in an area with developing foot and car traffic. Private owner has verbally agreed with a Memorandum in process.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:
Ocala Cultural Arts received the OMAC grant application from Justin Alsedek requesting $2,000 on July 21, 2026. The mural will be 57 feet by 24 feet. artist will use Behr Exterior house paints, Golden MSA (mineral spirit-based acrylic) varnish, and a boom lift. Varnish will be reapplied every 4 years. The projected start date is October 2026 through December 2026. Justin has 6 years of working in public art with 9 pieces of similar caliber and size. Justin Alsedek has dozens of awards from galleries and art festivals, been featured in Ocala Magazine, Mosaic Magazine, Style Magazine, Star Banner Newspaper, and the Ocala Gazette. Justin Alsedek has not applied for the current public Artist Roster but was registered in the previous roster. He has murals at the Marion Cultural Alliance, Reilly Arts Center, Discovery Center, and 8th Ave Gallery. The business and the artist are in Marion County. Funding will be used for allowable expenditures within the grant requirements. The OMAC grant fund has $4,800 available to spend this fiscal year. Staff recommends approval of the Face the Day Salon and Spa Mural Grant.
