BACKGROUND:
The Ocala Police Department (OPD) is equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in its building and vehicles to allow for a rapid response to cardiac events. Personnel can assist a cardiac arrest victim before paramedics arrive, thereby increasing the chance of survival. Ocala Fire Rescue and area hospitals use the LifePak CR2 defibrillators.
OPD is due for replacement of its four-year-old AEDs, which potentially become unreliable with age and eventually obsolete. The new AEDs are more efficient and easier to use. One of the new standout features of the LifePak CR2 is its ability to notify the user of any deficiencies, such as low battery or the need for replacement pads. It also has an infant/child mode that delivers a lower energy level without requiring electrode changes. This proactive approach can significantly enhance the reliability and readiness of the AEDs in critical situations.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:
Investing in LifePak CR2 Cellular Defibrillators will enhance OPD's capability to respond to cardiac arrest emergencies, thereby saving lives. This transaction includes a trade-in credit of $300/unit toward the purchase of new units, totaling $18,000, which is applied to the purchase price. The trade-in program not only offsets the cost of the new units but also promotes the recycling and responsible disposal of the old equipment, contributing to our sustainability goals.
