BACKGROUND:

On May 15, 2024, the Ocala Police Department (OPD) was advised that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) State Safety Office allocated overtime reimbursement funding For the Florida Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety High Visibility Education and Enforcement Campaign in the amount of $50,810 for overtime worked by OPD sworn law enforcement officers.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:

OPD, via the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM), is to receive a subgrant award in the amount of $50,810 to be utilized by May 9, 2025. These funds will reimburse overtime expenses incurred by sworn police officers conducting high visibility education and enforcement in areas with the highest numbers of traffic crashes that have resulted in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. The project goal is to mitigate crashes by increasing awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists in the City of Ocala.

Funding will be used to compensate officers who work overtime on high visibility enforcement operations. OPD will continue to focus on education and awareness of traffic laws and will provide FDOT approved bicycle lights to those seen in violation of same.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The City will receive $50,810 in grant funding to assist the OPD with this program. No match is required; however, any additional benefit costs shall be absorbed by the City. Funds will be housed in accounts 001-050-857-521-52-14010 and 001-050-857-521-52-21010.
