body

BACKGROUND:

The cascade system, also known as a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) fill station, is required to fill and refill 4,500 psi air cylinders worn by firefighters that provide breathable air in an immediately dangerous to life or health atmosphere. One of Ocala Fire Rescue’s current breathing air fill stations is over 30 years old. As a result, the stressed unit has required additional maintenance and upkeep to allow it to function within acceptable limits and has required several rebuilds of the compressor block to keep it functioning properly. We have been advised that the unit is obsolete and should be replaced.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:

The replacement of this equipment will improve firefighter safety and continue to allow two locations for the refilling of SCBA bottles.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Fire Rescue was approved for $50,000 Fiscal Year 2021-2022 through the annual budget. An additional $9,952 is required to fund the purchase.  These funds will be transferred from the Infrastructure Sales Surtax Reserve account to account number 120-019-910-522-66-64010.

PROCUREMENT REVIEW:

This has been reviewed and approved by procurement and meets the City’s policies.
