BACKGROUND:
On 02/21/2023, the Ocala Police Department (OPD) was advised that the application submitted by the City of Ocala for the 2021 Justice Assistance Grant - County-wide (JAGC) was approved in the amount of $25,100 to aid with the purchase of equipment for the OPD Technology Initiative.
The award totaling $25,100 is to be utilized by 6/30/2023. These funds will purchase mobile rapid identification equipment. A mobile rapid identification equipment is a fingerprint scanner the size of a smart phone. It provides OPD with immediate verification of subjects' identities in the field. The wireless technology liberates officers to quickly capture forensic-quality biometric data for comparison against stored watch lists or databases. The on-the-go availability of the scanner saves officers' time and helps them preserve safety through immediate action. The scanners can search for outstanding warrants, missing persons reports, and protective orders and can only access databases that contain the fingerprints of those arrested. The vision is to be able to outfit each officer with a scanner.
FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:
Funding will be used to purchase Rapid ID equipment.
FISCAL IMPACT:
The City will receive $25,100 in grant funding to assist the Police Department with this program. No match required. However, the City of Ocala agrees to absorb any residual costs incurred. Expenditures will be applied to account #001-050-837-521-52-52010.
