body

BACKGROUND:

Ocala Electric Utility (OEU) currently maintains joint-use agreements with 12 communication utilities that attach their cables to our power poles. Collectively, these providers account for 49,872 individual attachments. For 2025, the approved attachment rate is $31.17 per attachment, which will generate approximately $1,554,510.24 in annual revenue for the utility.

Wire 3, LLC is the latest utility to begin installing fiber optic infrastructure within Ocala. This infrastructure enables them to distribute connectivity to homes and businesses throughout their network.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:

Establishing joint-use agreements with providers like Wire 3, LLC offers several benefits. These partnerships increase the availability and variety of communication services for Ocala residents and businesses. At the same time, they generate additional revenue for OEU, helping offset the costs of maintaining and managing pole infrastructure. This approach supports both economic development and utility sustainability. Staff recommends approval.

FISCAL IMPACT:

As Wire 3, LLC continues to expand its fiber network within the city, the number of pole attachments will increase. This growth will lead to additional annual revenue for the City of Ocala through the established per-attachment rate. Over time, this added income will contribute to reducing the financial burden of pole maintenance and system upgrades.  Revenue will be applied to account 457-343-000-000-02-34112.
