BACKGROUND:

On 05/12/23, the Ocala Police Department (OPD) was informed that the FDOT State Safety Office allocated overtime reimbursement funding for the Florida Bicycle Pedestrian High Visibility Enforcement Initiative in the amount of $36,920 for overtime worked by OPD sworn law enforcement officers.

OPD, via the Institute of Police Technology and Management (IPTM), is to receive a subgrant award in the amount of $36,920 to be utilized by 05/10/2024. These funds will reimburse overtime expenses incurred by sworn police officers conducting high visibility education and enforcement details in areas with the highest representation of traffic crashes that have resulted in serious and fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists. The project goal is to mitigate crashes by increasing awareness of and compliance with traffic laws that protect the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists in the City of Ocala.

FINDINGS AND CONCLUSIONS:

Funding will be used to compensate officers who work overtime on the high visibility enforcement operations. The police department will continue to focus on education and awareness of traffic laws and will provide FDOT approved bicycle lights to those seen in violation.

FISCAL IMPACT:

The city will receive $36,920 in grant funding to assist the Ocala Police Department with this program. No match is required; however, any additional benefit costs shall be absorbed by the City.
